Samajaa Do Tum Apni Yaado Ko Zara,
Din-Raat tang Karati Hai Mujhe Qarzdaar Ki Tarah.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Ek chhote se sawaal par Itni khamoshi,
Bas itna hi toh puchha tha- “Kabhi wafaa ki he kisi se ??”

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Tum Khud Ko Samjhte Ho Na Jaane Kya Kuch,..
Toh Sunlo….
Hum bhi tumhe kuch nahi Samjhte Zindagi Ke Siwa !!!

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Bhul to jaau tujhe,….
Par mere paas rahega kya??

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Chalo Maan Liya Mujhe Mohabbat Karni Nahi Aati,
Lekin Zara Ye To Batao; Tumhe DiL Todna Kisne Sikhaya??

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

aaj ek zamane baad unko humari yaad aayi,
Dil khush to hua magar fir bhi na jane kyun aankh bhar aayi.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Kuchh to bewafayi he mujhme bhi,
Jo ab tak zinda hun tere begair.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Aey Ishq Suna Tha Tu Andha hai,
Fir mere Ghar ka Rasta tujhe Kisne Bataya??

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Jab koi Apna Dusro ke Kareeb hone lagta he,
To Dooriyo ka Ehsaas zyada hota he.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Aaj Kaise Wo So Gya Humse Mehfil-e- Guftagu Kiye Begair,
Jo Kehte The ‘Teri Baton Main neend Se Bhi Ziada sakoon Milta He.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Kya Mila Tumhe Sari Umar Mahobbat Karke ?
Ek Rone Ka hunar, Or ek Raato ka Jaagna.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Simat Gaya mera pyaar chand Alfazo me,
Jab usne Kaha, Mahobbat toh hai,…Magar tumse nahi.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Chhor Diya Uska Intezaar Karna Humesha ke Liye,
Jise Nigaahon ki Qadar nahi Use Mud-mud Ke Kya Dekhana.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Soch Samajh Kar Aankhein Milana Tum,
Ye Pyaar Bohot Pyaar Se Ho Jata Hai.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Marham Nahi To… Humure Zakhmo Par Namak Hi Laga Do,
Hum To Tere chhu Lene Se Theek Ho jaenge.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

He Aarzoo ek raat tum aao Khwaab me,
Bas Dua he us raat ki kabhi Subha na Ho.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

tu ishq ki dusari nishani de de mujhko,
aansoo toh roz gir ke Sukh jatey he.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

kya batau kitana mushkil Hai jeena,
Jis ke liye jeena, Usi ke Bina jeena.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Mahobbat Jeet Jayegi Agar Tum Maan Jao Toh,
Mere DiL me Tum Hi Tum Ho Agar Jaan Jao Toh.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

Wo na Hi Milate to Achha hota,
Bekaar me Mahobbat Se Nafarat Ho gayi.

⊱✿ ✣ ✿⊰

saans to lene diya karo.
Aankh khulate hi yaad Aa jate ho.

Aapse milne ke baad ab aapko khona nhi chahte,
Ek pyari si khushi milne k baad rona nhi chahte,
Neend toh bahut hain humari aankhon mein,
Magar aapse baat kare bina sona nahi chahte..!

He started writing poetry in his late teens (in late 1920’s). It was a time when Akhtar Shirani   and Hafeez Jalladhari   had captivated people and nazams (poems) were more popular than ghazals. Naghma-e Zaar   a work of Hafeez Jallandhari with abhi to mein jawaan hoon   (uploaded here) had just been published. So it would be safe to assume that he was influenced by such poetry. Adam is a master of short meters and simplicity of ideas which touch the heart. He is himself characterized by his friends as a simple, straightforward, and honest man. I feel that every young man/woman who understands Urdu and has access to his poetry, loves it. He shunned publicity. He adeptly and fluently uses words like kharaabaat   adam   mey   khirad   hashr  (all coming to Urdu from Farsi/Arabic), etc. Farsi  terms are blended well. His verses are beautiful and full of musical rhythm. There are about four dozen published collections of his Urdu poetry. The first, Naqsh-e Davaam   was published in 1934. It consists mostly of nazams (as opposed to ghazals), and the style is mostly that of Hafeez Jallandhari, Akhtar Shirani, and Josh Malihabadi (all masters of Urdu poetry of that time). He later turned to ghazals. He also wrote masnawis (long poems) and qataats   (quatrains). His publications include Dastaan-e Heer (1959)   and a masnawi on Pakistans political history, Jhoot Such (1972)   Most of his works are collections of his ghazals. He was so adept in writing poetry that he could complete a ghazal in a few minutes. The last three works were published following his death. His philosophy is of being patient and content in life and not make difficult for others by being greedy. The suffering and sorrows of the have-nots are expressed very efficiently and in a personal manner.

Kashti bhi na badli dariya bhi na badla,
par ham dubne walon ka jazba bhi na badla,
hai shok-e-safar aisa ek umar se hamne..
manzil bhi na payi or rasta bhi na badla…!!!

Waqt kya badla ki unki keemat badal gyi.
Suraj dhala to saaye ki surat badal gyi.
1 umar tak hum jinki zarurat bne rhe.
Fir yu hua k.
unki zarurat badal gyi.

Kitni Mushkil Se Kati Kal Ki Meri Raat Na Pooch,
Dil Se Nikli Hui Honthon Mein Dabi Baat Na Pooch,

Main Jiske Waste Lad Jaoon Is Khudai Se,
Mujhe Khud Se Hai Pyari Yeh Kiski Zaat Na Pooch,

Wo Kis Ada Se Mere Samne Se Ghuzri Hai Abhi,
Kis Tarha Maine Sambhale Mere Jazbat Na Pooch,

Waqt Jo Badla To Insan Badal Jaata Hai,
Kya Nahi Dikhlate Yeh Gardish-E-Halat Na Pooch,

Woh Kiska Ho Bhi Gayi Aur Mujhe Khabar Na Hui,
Kis Tarha Usne Chhudaya Hai Mujhse Haath Na Pooch,

Is Tarha Pal Mein Mujhe Begana Kar Diya Usne,
Kis Tarha Apno Se Khai Hai Maine Maat Na Pooch,

Ab Tera Pyar Nahi Hai Tu Sanam Kuch Bhi Nahi,
Kitni Mushkil Se Bani Thi Dil KI Kainat Na Pooch..!!!

Chashmay mastay ajabay zulf daraazay ajabay,
Mai parastay ajabay fitna tarazay ajabay,
Behray qatlam chu kushad taighe-nihaan sar basajud,
Oo ba-naazay ajabay mun be-neyaazay ajabay,
Turk taazay ajabay sho’bada baazay ajabay;
Kajkulahay ajabay arbada saazay ajabay;
Haq mago kalma-e kufr ast darein ja Khusrau;
Raaz daanay ajabay saaheb-e raaz-e ajabay.

English Translation-

O wondrous ecstatic eyes, o wondrous long locks,
O wondrous wine worshipper, o wondrous mischievous sweetheart.
As he draws the sword, I bow my head in prostration so as to be killed,
O wondrous is his beneficence, o wondrous my submission.
O wondrous amorous teasing, o wondrous beguiling,
O wondrous tilted cap, o wondrous tormentor.
Do not reveal the Truth; in this world blasphemy prevails, Khusrau;
O wondrous source of mystery, o wondrous knower of secrets

Thy Self art to remain : drachma may void.”]

The Promise

translation from Rumi’s Divan by Fatemeh Keshavarz

Read the poem:
When pain arrives side by side with your love
I promise not to flee
When you ask me for my life
I promise not to fight

I am holding a cup in my hand
By God if you do not come
Till the end of time
I promise not to pour out the wine
Nor to drink a sip

Your bright face is my day
Your dark curls bring the night
If you do not let me near you
I promise not go to sleep…nor rise

Your magnificence has made me a wonder
Your charm has taught me the way of love
I am the progeny of Abraham
I’ll find my way through fire

Please, let me drink water from the jug
This love is not a short-lived fancy
It is the daily prayer, the year-after-year fast
I live it, like an act of worship, till the end of my life

But then, a tree
Blessed not with fruits of your bounty
Will be dry wood for fire
Even if it drinks the ocean

On the wings of the Friend, fly o my heart!
Fly and look upward
For high on the peak of presence
Earthlings like you will not be let in

Others praise God at the time of affliction
You stay awake day and night
Steady, watchful like the wheel of the firmament

Time to stop speaking of the Friend
Jealousy won’t let me scatter the perfume to the wind

A Great Wagon

Read the poem:

When I see your face, the stones start spinning!
You appear; all studying wanders.
I lose my place.

Water turns pearly.
Fire dies down and doesn’t destroy.

In your presence I don’t want what I thought
I wanted, those three little hanging lamps.

Inside your face the ancient manuscripts
Seem like rusty mirrors.

You breathe; new shapes appear,
and the music of a desire as widespread
as Spring begins to move
like a great wagon.
Drive slowly.
Some of us walking alongside
are lame!

~

Today, like every other day, we wake up empty
and frightened. Don’t open the door to the study
and begin reading. Take down a musical instrument.

Let the beauty we love be what we do.
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.

~

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase each other
doesn’t make any sense.

~

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.

I would love to kiss you.
The price of kissing is your life.

Now my loving is running toward my life shouting,
What a bargain, let’s buy it.

~

Daylight, full of small dancing particles
and the one great turning, our souls
are dancing with you, without feet, they dance.
Can you see them when I whisper in your ear?

~

They try to say what you are, spiritual or sexual?
They wonder about Solomon and all his wives.

In the body of the world, they say, there is a soul
and you are that.

But we have ways within each other
that will never be said by anyone.

~

Come to the orchard in Spring.
There is light and wine, and sweethearts
in the pomegranate flowers.

If you do not come, these do not matter.
If you do come, these do not matter.

Youth of Persia ever fair!]

Jāmī. ‘Abdul Raḥmān Jāmī (d. 898/1492) is the last eminent poet of the ‘Irāqī style and has been so dear to the poets of the later period, and hence Iqbal’s regard for him. Iqbal has quoted from as well as appreciated and also followed him in some Persian and Urdu couplets. The example of Iqbal’s quotations from Jāmī is as follows:

نظم و نثر او علاجِ خامیم

کشتۂ اندازِ ملاّ جامیم

در ثنای خواجہ گوہر سفتہ است

شعر لب ریزِ معانی گفتہ است

’’نسخۂ کونین را دیباچہ است
جملہ عالم بندگان و خواجہ اوست‘‘[43]

[I am lost in admiration of the style of Mullā Jāmī,

His verse and prose are a remedy for my immaturity.

He has written poetry overflowing with beautiful ideas,

And has threaded pearls in praise of the Master.

“Muḥammad is the preface to the book of the universe:

All in world are slaves and he is the Master”.]
